"Welcome Back the Trout" Day
Name:
"Welcome Back the Trout" Day
Date:
October 4, 2014
Event Description:
(Update courtesy of Hildy Angius):
Trout stocking south of Davis Dam has been on hiatus for nearly a year, but that will change beginning Oct. 1.
Trout from Arizona Game and Fish hatcheries, and raised by the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery, are ready for the first stocking south of Davis Dam.
“This is great news and a fantastic opportunity for anglers on the Colorado River,” said Matt Chmiel, the fisheries program manager for the Game and Fish Region 3 office in Kingman. “While fishing in the area has remained strong, trout have been recognizably absent for nearly a year."
Arizona Game and Fish and Mohave County are planning a “Welcome Back the Trout” day on Oct. 4 to commemorate the return of this popular sport fish. The event and clinic will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Davis Camp in Bullhead City.
During the clinic hours individuals may fish without a license and entrance to the park will be free as well. Fish will be stocked prior to the event and Game and Fish will have educational booths as well as rods, reels, and bait for those in need. Personnel will be available to provide assistance to novice anglers.
Walmart is donating 50 fishing poles as prizes. Other prizes include a hand-crafted rod from Rods by Rick and a barbecue grill in the shape of a fishing bobber from Riviera Marina.
“Mohave County wants to thank Arizona Game and Fish for all the help they have provided to us while we straighten out our problems with the Willow Beach National Mitigation fish hatchery,” said Mohave County Supervisor Hildy Angius. “I believe we will work out a long term solution but in the meantime we want anglers to know that Bullhead City and Mohave County are open for business and that the fish are biting!”
Chmiel explained stockings will continue for several weeks in October, but that all fish will need to be stocked before the end of October when water levels are expected to drop.
Zen Mocarski, public information officer for the Kingman office, said fishing remains one of the best deals in daily entertainment. A license is $37 for in-state residents and $5 for all youth ages 10-17. The license is good for all fishing in the state, including trout, and is valid for 12 months. Licenses are available at the Kingman office as well as at license dealers throughout the state and online at www.azgfd.gov/fishing.
For a statewide fishing report, log on to the Game and Fish Department's website at azgfd.gov. For more information about the October 4th Welcome Back the Trout Event, please call Karen Flenniken at (928) 758-0713.
